FOREST LANDSCAPES

Amathole Mistbelt Forest

The mistbelt forest biomes of South Africa, particularly the Afromontane Amathole forests, are renowned for their cooler and more humid climate in contrast to the adjacent lowlands. These forests typically flourish in mountainous ravines on south-facing slopes. Notably, the presence of yellowwoods, along with other tall trees, is a distinctive feature of these forests.

Transkei Scarp Forest

South Africa's scarp forests are a unique feature that stretches along the east coast, starting from just north of the Kei River mouth in the Eastern Cape and extending to northern KwaZulu-Natal. These forests are characterised by their impressive height, rich biodiversity, and diverse structure, with a significant number of endemic species found in both the canopy and herbaceous understory layers.

About

Africa boasts some of the most diverse and productive indigenous forests in the world. In South Africa the forest biomes run along the Eastern Escarpment from the Cape Peninsula to the Limpopo river. The Trees for Africa campaign under Food & Trees for Africa focuses on restoration and conservation of these precious, biodiverse ecosystems. Our objective is to pioneer forest restoration in South Africa with the goal to expand our forest restoration efforts across the African continent. We believe in a holistic approach to Forest Landscape Restoration, which encompasses both ecological initiatives and the promotion of harmonious social systems. Our goal is to create a sustainable solution that effectively preserves forest ecosystems.
